Itinerary
Saturday, Sept. 6:
Throughout the day, crew arrived in Tonnarella. We had six boats in our flotilla: four catamarans and two monohulls. Our chart briefing at the DYC Portorosa base started at 2pm and lasted almost two hours! That evening, all of the crews dined at the restaurant alongside the marina.
Sunday, Sept. 7:
All six boats left the marina in the morning and headed to Lipari. Although there were light winds, all boats raised their sails for a shake-down. To help the crews get to know each other, we all anchored near each other. The two pairs of catamarans ran lines from their sterns to each other.
That evening, everyone donned their cruise shirts and dinghied over to Paul’s boat for a party:
Monday, Sept. 8:
All boats were underway by mid-morning. We anchored near Isola di Lisca Bianco to go snorkeling - and find the bubbles from the nearby thermal activity.
We then headed to the island of Stromboli to the mooring balls. Many people dinghied into the town to check it out. That night, a zodiac came to each boat to take its crew to the north end of the island to watch the volcanic activity. Mt. Stromboli erupts every 20 minutes!
Tuesday, Sept. 9:
A little sailing, mostly motor-sailing, to the Salina. All boats flawlessly executed stern-to docking! People wandered into town but came back for Happy Hour. Later that night, we had another flotilla party - this time with a Gilligan’s Island theme. The best-dressed character was selected and photographed:
Wednesday, Sept. 10:
Casual departure, heading back to Lipari. Docked again, this time at Eolmare Marina - in view of the Lipari Castle. That evening, many went into town for dinner.
Thursday, Sept. 11:
Several went to the archeological museum which featured a 4,000 year old excavation site.
We had to leave the marina by noon, then re-fuel nearby. Then set off for the island of Vulcano. On the way, many sailed the straight between Lipari and Vulcano:
